ARTH 111 - Survey African and African American Art

The first half of the course will provide a general introduction to the arts of several African cultures from the 12th through 20th centuries, primarily in West and East Africa, and focusing on metalwork, sculpture, architecture and fiber arts. Diverse subjects will be explored, including the representation of religious/spiritual themes, pattern, abstraction and the representation of the human figure. In the second half of the course, the arts of the African Diaspora as represented in the United States will be surveyed, through several historical periods and the work of many important individual artists.
