Modernist experimentation and social protest will be examined through comparative analysis of American novels written in the first four decades of the 20th century. The emphasis will be on how diverse American novelists contested the existing notions of gender, race and class to usher in a new aesthetic and cultural awareness. Some ‘odd’ literary couples will include Anderson/Stein, Faulkner/Hurston, Hemingway/Barnes, Steinbeck/Olsen, Wilder/Cather, Wright/Larsen.
